Courtesy Visit to the Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching


The Commerce Committee of The Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) and the Industry Committee of the Kuching Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCGCCI) paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Yonny Tri Prayitno, the Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia in Kuching on 10th March 2020, led by Deputy President of ACCCIS cum President of KCGCCI Dato Tan Jit Kee.

Accompanying at this courtesy visit were Dr. Christopher Ngui, Chairman of Commerce Committee of ACCCIS cum Vice President of KCGCCI, Dr. Richard Tan, Chairman of Industry Committee of KCGCCI, Mr. Choo Chiang Liang, Deputy Chairman of Industry Committee of KCGCCI and both committee’s members they were Mr. Ho Siew Hua, Mr. Ho Kim Ming, Mr. Wong Diong Chai, Mr. Pau Kiu Sung, and Mr. Tan Chen Sin from Young Entrepreneur Committee. Madam Irhamna Fithriya, Consul for Economic Affairs and Mr. Alexandri Legawa were also presence in the courtesy visit.

The main purpose of this visit was to explore and promote mutual cooperation with in-depth understanding of business opportunities and investment when Indonesia’s capital relocates.

We were given to understand that the construction of the new capital would commence in the second half of this year in part of North Penajam Paser regency and part of Kutai Kertanegara regency in East Kalimantan on Borneo to eventually become home to 6-7 million people.

The new capital of Indonesia will be a smart green metropolis coasting Rp 466 trillion (USD 34 billion). The Indonesian government will provide 19% of the funds and the remaining funds will come from the “public and private partnership” (PPP) model and private investors.

Dato Tan said that Indonesia and Malaysia, especially Kalimantan and Sarawak, have always been good neighbors with bilateral trade. KCGCCI had organized a trade mission to Kalimantan a few years back with fruitful result and Sarawak, as a neighbors of the new capital will definitely benefit from the relocation.

Participants were enthusiastic and asked many questions on the new capital, including the latest progress, overall planning, industries / fields that will open to foreign investors, related agencies, incentives, foreign investment terms and conditions, as well as local business environment, etc.

Once the bill on new capital is approved by the Indonesian parliament, its government will set up a special work task committee.  Further information and related rules and regulations will only be available then. ACCCIS will keep close contact with the Consulate General of Indonesia and look forward to further cooperation in the future.
